Description

Are you a doctoral student or early career researcher who has ever felt that, regardless of your academic accomplishments, you are about to be unmasked as a fraud? That you’ll never quite reach a stage of academic legitimacy?

Sound a bit familiar? Join us. We want to start a conversation. Through this event we will be unpacking different notions of what it means to both ‘be’ and ‘become’ academic, opening the space for innovative ideas around what an academic identity can mean in today’s world. We will be hosting a dynamic one-day symposium, aimed at exploring the emotional processes involved in both being and becoming academic. The day will involve presentations from students, workshops, creative activities and panel discussions. We want to create a space for doctoral and early career researchers from across disciplines to explore what work our emotions do. What the implications of this are for how we both understand and contribute to knowledge production?

Be sure to check out our blog for posts from the organisers and other contributors regarding personal journeys through the emotions of being and becoming an academic at https://becomingacademic2017.wordpress.com/

'Ticket purchase' (the sympsium is free) is open on this page until 17th of May. Due to the limited number of spaces, please only register for the symposium if you are certain you can attend. Once registered (at latest a week prior to the symposium), you will receive an email with a Survey Monkey survey regarding dietary restrictions and a brief reflection on "Being and becoming academic". Please complete this survey so that we can have all responses prior to the symposium in order to anonymize and collate them for everyone's viewing pleasure on the day of the symposium.
